STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY OF COACHING

INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETICS AT

NORTH ATTLEBORO HIGH SCHOOL

North Attleboro High School coaches recognize that interscholastic athletics is an integral part of the education process for both participants and spectators.  North Attleboro Public Schools seeks to provide this educational experience to those athletically inclined students who possess skill and competitive spirit.

Interscholastic athletics is a voluntary program designed to accommodate the highly motivated student athlete.  It is a program designed to provide participation for as many students as possible with the intent of fostering the physical, social, mental, and emotional well-being of each individual.  The Athletic Department encourages multiple sport participation, and it is expected that all coaches should support this philosophy.

Student-athletes should be reminded continually that participation in interscholastic athletics is a privilege, one that carries a great deal of responsibility to one’s self and others, to the team, the school and the community.

It is expected that through athletic participation and competition the objectives of self-discipline, perseverance and sportsmanship will be achieved.  As a coach at North Attleboro High School you should constantly reinforce these objectives.  The ultimate goal of interscholastic athletics at NAHS is to enhance the growth and development of the individual within a team concept.

North Attleboro High School is a member of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association and Hockomock League.  We are governed by MIAA policies as stated in the MIAA Coaches’ Handbook, Hockomock League By-laws, and NAHS policies as stated in this Coaches’ Handbook.  As a member of the coaching staff at North Attleboro High School, it is imperative that you be aware of and abide by all these policies.

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY AND PARTICIPATION

ELIGIBILITY

Complete and accurate squad lists are to be submitted to the Athletic Director one week prior to the first contest and re-submitted one week prior to report card distribution during the season.  The lists are to be organized alphabetically by class.  No athlete will be allowed to join a team after the first week of the season except for extenuating circumstances (ex. Cut, sickness, medical, etc.).  A student joining the team under these circumstances must be a member of the team for seven calendar days, with the exception of football, which requires 15 days, prior to participation in a scheduled contest.  No student who was previously academically ineligible may join a team for which cuts have been made for that season.

In some instances eligibility regulations may exceed the rules established by the MIAA.

1. All athletes must pass a physical examination and fill out a physical form. The Athletic Director will arrange for physical examinations of those students in need, and it is the responsibility of the coach to notify all candidates.  No student is allowed to participate if they have not submitted a signed copy of their physical exam to their coach that must be dated   within 395 days of the first day of practice for that season.  A student whose physical expires during the course of a season must submit a new physical prior to the next athletic season

2. All athletes must submit a complete Medical History Form and a Parent/Athlete Agreement Form. Coaches will issue Medical and Parent/Athlete forms to all candidates. Students will not be allowed to participate until both forms have been signed and returned to respective coaches. Coaches must submit a copy of the medical form to the Athletic Director at the beginning of the season and maintain a copy for themselves that should be accessible to them in the event of injury. Return all forms to the Athletic Director at the completion of the season.

3. A student must not be in his/her fifth year of high school.

4. A student must not have reached 19 years of age by September 1.

5. A student must meet all academic requirements outlined below.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

A student must secure during the last marking period preceding the contest a passing grade in at least 20 periods of prepared work.  Prepared work is defined as any subject or course in which credit is allowed toward the high school diploma.  A student cannot at any time represent a school unless that student is taking at least 20 periods of prepared work.  To be eligible for the fall marking period, students are required to have final passing grades in full year courses and second semester courses in the required number of periods of prepared work (20).  The academic eligibility of all students shall be considered as official and determining only on the date when report cards for that ranking period have been issued to the parents of all students.

a.         A student who repeats work upon which he/she has once received credit cannot count that subject a second time for eligibility.

b.         A student cannot count for eligibility any subject taken during the summer vacation, unless that subject has previously been pursued and failed.

c.         Students receiving services under Chapter 766 whose individualized education plan is a 502.4 or more restrictive prototype, may be declared academically eligible by their principal provided that all other eligibility requirements are met.

ATTENDANCE

1. Absences – Any student who is absent on a given day will not be allowed to participate in a practice or contest on that day.  All coaches are to comply with this department policy and inform their athletes accordingly.  It is imperative that each coach carefully check the daily attendance report.  If extenuating circumstances are evident, approval to participate must come from the PRINCIPAL.  Any student who is absent from school and participates in a practice or game without administrative approval, will be suspended from that team for three (3) days by the Athletic Director.  If a student is absent from school on Friday due to illness, he/she must present a doctor’s note to the coach if he/she wishes to participate in a weekend athletic contest.  This note is to certify that the athlete is physically capable of participating.

2. Tardiness and Dismissals – Coaches will not allow any student to participate in a game or practice if that student is not in attendance for five full class periods of that school day.  If extenuating circumstances are evident, approval to participate must come from the PRINCIPAL.
